For anyone trying to break into the medical field, starting out as a Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN is a great way to get quickly started. An LPN can work in a wide range of settings to include home care, hospitals, long term care facilities and occupational and outpatient clinics. They are responsible for health counseling, administering medication, rehabilitation and restorative care under the direction of a Doctor or a Registered Nurse.
The New York Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) runs a great LPN program. One of the best for NYC residents is the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing. In less than 18 months, a student can complete all needed training and graduate into a growing job market. Located in Bellport, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES LPN is operated out of the BrookhavenTechnicalCenter at 350 Martha Avenue.
Traveling by train from NYC and back is very simple. The Long Island Railroad has an extensive schedule that can easily get students out for the evening classes. The current train schedule can be found at http://mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Station/MontaukMY3.pdf. Local taxis and buses are a quick connection from the Bellport Station to the school.
Getting to Bellport by car is also very easy. Drivers just need to use 495 out to Long Island, then take exit 65 South (Horseblock Road). Exit at Station Road and drive south until you come to Martha Avenue. The BrookhavenTechnicalCenter is on the left.
Through the Eastern Suffolk BOCES LPN Program, Brookhaven offers three class schedules for students who may need either full or part-time studies depending on their situation. Each program consists of classroom instruction and practical training in local clinics and hospitals. Completing any of these programs qualifies a graduate to take the New York Licensing Examination:
1) Full Time, 11 Month, Daytime Program. Classes are held Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 2:30pm, September to August (i.e. Sep 2013 – Aug 2014).
2) Part Time, 17 Month, Evening Program. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm, September through June (i.e. Sep 2013 – Jun 2014) and then Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm for the next September through March (i.e. Sep 2014 – Mar 2015).
3) Part Time, 17 Month, Daytime Program. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 7:45 am to 10:15 am or from Noon to 2:45pm September through June (i.e. Sep 2013 – Jun 2014) and then 8:00 am to 2:30 pm for the next September through March (i.e. Sep 2014 – Mar 2015). Please note that this third program is only available for high school seniors in the First Supervisory District.
The first step to enroll in the BOSCE LPN programs is to take and pass the Nurse Entrance Exam. The number to call to schedule an exam time with the BrookhavenTechnicalCenter is (631) 289-2200. Once the exam has been passed, students enrolling in any of these classes can apply for Pell Grants, Direct Loans and other Federal and New York State Title IV Financial Aid Programs. To get started, students need to submit the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The Enrollment Office can help with any questions about the exam or applying for student aid. Good Luck!
